Why Nail Care Is So Important for Your Dog

As the weather warms up and we spend more time walking our dogs outdoors, it's a great time to check in on their paw health—especially their nails. Regular nail trims are more than just a grooming task; they’re essential for your dog’s comfort and movement.

When a dog’s nails grow too long, it can actually change the way their feet hit the ground. This alters their gait (the way they walk), which can lead to strain in the muscles of their feet, legs, hips, and eventually their spine. Over time, this kind of stress can cause discomfort and even contribute to more serious mobility issues.

A helpful way to think about it is this: imagine not trimming your own toenails for a couple of months, then putting on socks and shoes and going for a walk. You’d probably shift how you move to avoid discomfort—and dogs are no different.

If trimming your dog’s nails at home isn’t an option, your veterinarian or groomer will be happy to help. Regular nail care is a simple but powerful way to support your dog’s long-term mobility and overall well-being.
